Late goal pushes Tigers past Ladies

GAMBIER, Ohio – In Saturday's regular-season finale at Mavec Field, the Kenyon College Ladies soccer team was defeated 1-0 by the DePauw University Tigers on a goal with just 35 seconds left in regulation. The result of that North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest pits the two teams against each other again, this time in the semifinal round of the upcoming NCAC Tournament.

Kenyon (8-7-1, 5-2-1 NCAC) will enter the four-team postseason tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Ladies will travel to Greencastle, Indiana on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tournament semifinal game at No. 1-seeded DePauw (11-5-2, 6-0-2 NCAC), which claimed the conference's regular-season title with Saturday's win.

The first half of play between the conference contenders was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to garner strong opportunities on net. The Ladies played possession, working through their defenders, primarily senior Annie Hesse and sophomore Joanna Kaizer.

Senior goalkeeper Jillian Countey was paramount for the Ladies defense. She saw 10 DePauw shots in the opening half and collected five saves. Her play kept the teams locked in a scoreless draw at halftime, despite DePauw outshooting the Ladies 10-4.

The second half was a different story for Kenyon, as it was able to string together multiple offensive opportunities. Sophomore midfielder Olivia Dion, who had two shots on goal, created chances for forwards Maddie Ladd and Fallon Raviol, but the Ladies just couldn't hit the Tigers' net.

The sheet was kept clean until the final minute. That's when a 24-yard shot from DePauw's Alex Berkley deflected off a defender and past Countey for the game-winning goal.

With its strong second-half play, Kenyon managed to even the opportunities a bit, but DePauw still walked away with a final 19-14 advantage in shots taken.

During halftime, the Ladies held their Senior Day ceremony, honoring Hesse, Countey, Raviol, Alyssa Sugar, Meredith Glover, Gwyneth Phillips and Morgan Engmann.
