Kenyon sweeps Allegheny on Senior Day

GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College bounced back from a slow start to sweep Allegheny College on Saturday in North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball action at Tomsich Arena. The Ladies improved to 4-12 and 2-1 in league play with the victory.

Prior to Saturday's match, the team honored the careers of seniors Mackenzie Bruzzio, Maleah Miller and Haley Witschey.

In the first set, the Gators raced out to an 8-1 lead as five different players recorded kills. In a hole, the Ladies started their comeback. A quick, 4-0 spurt brought the tally to 11-7. Then, Kenyon went on a 7-3 stretch to tie the set at 14-all. In that sequence, Witschey and Elyse Davidson each had two kills. Witschey then gave the Ladies the lead, 17-16, on a service ace. Kenyon never lost the lead after that and prevailed 25-23.

After a tight opening set, Allegheny struggled to keep pace with Kenyon in set two, falling 25-14. The Gators hit -.056, and tallied six kills with eight errors. Back-to-back aces from Witschey gave Kenyon a 5-2 advantage before an Ellie Luciani ace extended it to 10-4. Kenyon then reeled off an 8-0 run to go up 18-5. Bruzzio had three kills during that stretch.

The Ladies then closed the match with an emphatic third set. Kenyon hit a sizzling .444 while Allegheny fizzled, hitting -.231 with nine errors. Early on, it was 9-1 Ladies as they had a trio of aces, two of which came from Katie Howard, and kills by Witschey and Davidson. Miller's kill then pushed the home team's lead to double-digits, 13-3. Kenyon ended up winning 25-9.

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a road date at Kean University in Union, New Jersey on October 11.
