Ladies rally to earn season-opening win

GAMBIER, Ohio – Trailing by ten in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's season-opening game at Tomsich Arena, the Kenyon College women's basketball team rallied to steal a 47-45 victory from the Case Western Reserve University Spartans.

The Ladies (1-0) entered the final frame down 39-32, but Abbey Lawrence converted a three-pointer a minute into the quarter to give the visiting Spartans a 42-32 advantage. That, however, would be the last field goal Case would make.

Kenyon started to claw back into the game with two jumpers from junior Ellie Schaub. Sophomore Greta Propp then followed up with a three-point play off an assist from classmate Grace Connery, moving the Ladies to within three points with 6:27 left.

At 4:03, Amanda Carroll, also a sophomore, hit one of two free throws and a minute later Schaub nailed two more for the Ladies, who tied things up at 42-42 with 3:09 showing on the clock.

Meanwhile, the Kenyon defense held Case scoreless for a span of seven minutes. During that time, the Spartans went 0-for-12 from the floor and committed three turnovers.

On one of those last Spartans' missed field goals, Kenyon senior Paige Matijasich grabbed the rebound and took an elbow to her eye. After recuperating, she went to the foul line and sank both her free throws, giving Kenyon a 44-42 lead. With just 1:31 left on the clock, that was the Ladies' first lead of the game.

A Case turnover on the ensuing possession got into the hands of Kenyon sophomore Bridget Molnar, who also was fouled. She proceed to knock down two more free throws for Kenyon, which moved ahead 46-42 with 1:05 remaining.

Over the last minute of play, Case connected on 3-of-4 free throws, while Kenyon went 1-for-2 to seal the victory. The Spartans had one final opportunity to tie the score, but a running jumper from Alyssa Hyland missed its mark as time expired.

Schaub and Matijasich carried the Kenyon team to the finish line. Schaub posted game-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Matijasich tacked on 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Amanda Carroll matched Schaub's 11 rebounds for the Ladies, who held a 55-45 team advantage on the glass.

Lawrence led Case (1-1) with 15 points, while Emma Cain racked up the game's third double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Overall, it was a rough shooting night for both teams. Case was 15-of-59 (25.4 percent) and Kenyon went 15-of-64 (23.4 percent). The Ladies made up for it at the free throw line, where they were 13-of-18 (72.2 percent), compared to just 10-of-17 for Case (58.8 percent).
