Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Offensive woes spell loss for Kenyon

YORK, Pa. – A tough shooting performance, paired with 31 turnovers, resulted in a 62-39 loss for Kenyon College against The Catholic University of America on Friday night in a non-conference women's basketball game held at York College.

The contest was a part of York's 13th annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

The Ladies hit just 28.3 percent of their attempts and were 4-of-21 (19%) from downtown. Grace Connery was the only double-digit scorer, tallying 12 points on four three-pointers. Senior Paige Matijasich added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. That pair combined to hit seven of the team's 13 made field goals.

Additionally, Kenyon's 31 turnovers were the most since committing 34 against Grove City College on November 20, 2009.

A little more than midway through the first, a Connery long ball and Matijasich layup had Kenyon up 7-4. Connery added a step-back three-ball at 2:49 pushing Kenyon ahead 10-8. However, over the final minutes, Catholic hit all four of its free throws and an Erin Thompson fast-break jumper held the Cardinals hold a 14-12 lead after one.

In the second, Kenyon was down four, 16-12, before Connery and Ellie Schaub helped the Ladies tie it. Another three by Connery at the 7:29 mark and two Schaub free throws at 2:47 tied the game at 19-19. That would be the last of the scoring for Kenyon, though. Catholic closed the half with a 7-0 run and took a 26-19 lead into the locker room.

That momentum carried over into the third. A 9-2 stretch for the Cardinals helped them increase their lead to 35-21 after Sydney Poindexter's jumper with 6:45 on the clock. The closest Kenyon got the rest of the way was eight points (38-30) after two free throws from Bridget Molnar.

Tomorrow, the Ladies will play William Paterson University in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
