Late-half surge helps lift Denison over Lords

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- A kickoff return for touchdown paired with a late field goal helped Denison University erase a 13-7 Kenyon College advantage on Saturday as the Big Red went on to win 52-13 at Piper Stadium.

Kenyon finalized its 2019 record at 3-7 and 2-7 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Denison claimed a share of the NCAC Championship and improved to 8-2 overall and 7-2 in league play.

The Lords' first two possessions resulted in punts and on Denison's second series, the home squad went in front. Starting on their own 35-yard line, the Big Red went on a four-play drive, all rushes, and scored as Alex Minton ran in from six yards.

After the Lords punted again on their next series, Kenyon's defense was in a tough spot as Denison drove back into scoring territory. Facing a 2nd-and-2 from the Lords' 23-yard line, the Big Red were denied with back-to-back sacks from Darryl Shands and Nathan Fanta. That helped keep the score at 7-0.

That tally remained the same until about the five-minute mark of the second. A seven-play, 60-yard drive helped the Lords tie the game. Thomas Merkle found Andrew Schnarre twice in that series with the last being a 33-yard touchdown.

Three plays later, the Lords seized the lead. On second down, senior linebacker Sam Dickey picked off Denison's Drew Dawkins and went 50 yards to the house. After a missed extra point, the Lords led 13-7 with 1:41 remaining.

On the ensuing kickoff, Peyton Vining raced 91 yards for a score and the extra point was made giving the Big Red a 14-13 lead. The Lords' next series saw another punt, and, once more, Denison found a scoring drive. They ended the half with a Pat Kramer 23-yard field goal and led 17-13.

That momentum then carried over into the second half. Denison scored touchdowns on all three of its possessions and outgained Kenyon 178-12. By the end of the third, the Big Red led 38-13. The home team added two more touchdowns in the fourth for the final tally.

Schnarre hauled in a season-high nine catches for 125 yards and a score while Merkle complete 27 passes for 191 yards. Defensively, Ryan Mott tallied 10 tackles and Isaiah Mann notched two sacks.
