GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College (18-1-2) rolled to a 5-0 win against Penn State University Behrend in the NCAA Tournament first round on Saturday morning at Mavec Field. The victory sets up a second-round contest against the University of Rochester tomorrow at 1 p.m. at home.
Kenyon's relentless pressure helped the team, especially early on, when it scored twice in the first 6:21 of competition.
Sophomore
Sebastian Gaese broke the scoreless tie at 3:37. After the Lions failed to clear the ball, Gaese picked up possession at the top of the 18, and drove a few yards and then fired into the right corner. Not even three minutes later, Kenyon doubled its lead.
Scott Upton forced a turnover off Lions' leading scorer Richard Blanchard near the sideline. A few moments later,
Max Taylor shot from near the 18 and the ball deflected to
Sam Carson. The second-year forward corralled the ball and shot right side. It was his eighth goal of the season.
The two quick strikes completely sucked the life out of the Lions who attempted just two shots in the first half. Kenyon did its part defensively as it harassed PSU-Behrend into countless turnovers and never allowed the Lions to hold possession.
After halftime, the Lords added three more goals. Senior
Philippe Stengel drove left of the 18 and passed to an open
Sebastian Brylka who finished from the left side at 69:24. About five minutes later, Stengel headed a pass to
Atli Hrafnkelsson who scored near the right post.
Kenyon's final tally came from
Collyn Carpenter. After Behrend's goalie Matt Warnaka dropped
Minka Soumah's corner, Carpenter tapped in the loose ball near the right post.
In goal,
Ian McInturf denied three second-half Lion shots and moved within one clean sheet from tying Marshall Chapin ' 94 with 32 career shutouts.
Tomorrow's match versus Rochester will be the first meeting between the two schools. Ticket prices for the game are $7 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for children 17 and under. Students carrying a Kenyon ID will be admitted free.
