GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's basketball team had five players ring up double-digit scoring marks Saturday at Tomsich Arena, where the Lords rolled to an 80-61 victory over the visiting Yellow Jackets from Waynesburg University.
Kenyon led from start to finish, while improving its record to 2-2. Waynesburg, which trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half and 21 points in the second half, fell to 0-4 with the loss.
The 80 points were the most scored by the Kenyon men this year. The Lords also tallied single-game season-highs for field goal percentage (.492), three-point field goals made (9) and steals (10).
Sophomore
Elijah Davis recorded 16 points to lead the Lords in scoring for the third straight game. Junior
Ugnius Zilinskas poured in 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had a team-high five assists. Freshmen
Nick Lewis and
Sam Walch added 11 and 10 points, respectively, while classmate
Kase Cronin nearly pulled off a double-double, scoring 12 points and racking up eight rebounds.
As a team, the Lords were 29-of-59 (49.2 percent) from the floor, 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from three-point range, and 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) at the free throw line.
Lewis led the Lords in three-point shooting, going 3-of-5. Both Walch and
Kamal Aubakirov added a pair of three-pointers, while Davis and Zilinskas accounted for the other two long balls.
Kenyon jumped out to a 13-9 lead and never looked back. Walch scored the team's first five points, but after that, the Lords distributed the scoring evenly, with eight players recording at least two first-half points and no players scoring more than seven over the first 20 minutes.
A 42-28 halftime lead ballooned to an 18-point margin when Davis hit a three-pointer just a minute into the second half. Waynesburg would later creep to within nine points at the 7:39 mark, but a pair of Cronin free throws at 4:40 put Kenyon ahead by 19 points (73-54).
Lewis' final three-pointer of the afternoon ripped twine with just 1:20 left on the clock and gave Kenyon a 21-point advantage.
The Lords will break for Thanksgiving and won't play again until Sunday, December 1. That will be the team's North Coast Athletic Conference opener at DePauw University.
