Montclair State slips by Kenyon in double OT

GAMBIER, Ohio – Montclair State University's Brogan Quigley scored off a free kick in the 104th minute to lift the Red Hawks (18-4-2) past Kenyon College, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon in an NCAA Tournament third-round matchup.  MSU will now face Centre College tomorrow at 1 p.m. for a chance to earn a spot in the national semifinals.

Before the final tally, the Lords (19-2-2) had the upper-hand in shots (23-10) and possession but were held to just one goal.

In the first half, Montclair State's speed was evident, and posed some issues for the Lords' back line.  Within the first three minutes of action, Red Hawks striker Oscar Sanchez had an on-target look. However, Lords goalie Ian McInturf dove to the right post and stopped it.

Kenyon had a great look in the 28th minute as a cross came to Jack Cohen but the junior's header was denied by Michael Mejia. Less than two minutes later, Atli Hrafnkelsson headed a shot to the right post but the MSU defense stopped that and cleared it away.

After that, Montclair State took the lead. Sanchez navigated near the top of the 18 and his left-footed shot deflected off a Lords defender and into the net. That 1-0 lead remained the rest of the half despite two more quality looks from Kenyon by Hrafnkelsson and Philippe Stengel.

In the second half, the Lords dominated possession and out-shot the visitors 14-5. Their ninth shot of the half would ring true.

After a foul was issued, senior Max Taylor hit a beautiful, curving attempt into the upper-left corner tying the match with less than 10 minutes remaing. It was his second equalizing goal in as many matches.

Then, with about two minutes left, the Lords were knocking on the doorstep again, but Sam Carson's attempt from about six yards out hit the top crossbar.

That led competition into overtime. In the first extra session Scott Upton and Hrafnkelsson each had on-target attempts but Mejia stopped both. After a two-minute break, the two teams went into the second overtime. Upton provided the Lords' lone shot before Quigley's golden goal. Following a Kenyon foul, Quigley shot from left of the 18 and watched as his attempt deflected in near the left post.

For Kenyon, the loss snapped the team's 20-match unbeaten streak which tied for the program record. It was also just the team's second loss on Mavec Field dating back to September 21, 2017, a span of 33 matches.  Additionally, it was the final match for seniors John Penas, Gunner Found, Eric Albrecht, Stengel and Taylor. That group helped the program attain 73 wins, three NCAC Tournament titles and eight NCAA Tournament victories.
