GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College earned a 5-1 win against Oberlin College on Wednesday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal match at Mavec Field. The victory for the No. 1-seeded Lords moves them into the final where they will face either Wabash College or Ohio Wesleyan University on November 9 at 1 p.m.
In last week's regular-season match, the Lords scored 56 seconds in. This time around, Oberlin struck early.
A defensive misplay followed by a collision just inside Kenyon's 18-yard box resulted in a penalty kick. Yeomen leading scorer Nic Jandeleit followed with a shot to the left side which sent Oberlin's sideline into a frenzy.
Over the next 21 minutes, Kenyon settled down a bit, and had a couple quality looks before a PK of its own tied the match. After a team save on a
Scott Upton shot, Kenyon was fouled and Upton followed with a penalty-kick make at 22:32. It was his sixth goal of the year.
That 1-1 score held the remainder of the half before the Lords blew the lid off in the second stanza.
Just 3:19 into the half,
Jack Cohen crossed a pass from the left wing and watched as Upton headed it home. Oberlin had no response over the next 11 minutes before the Lords went up 3-1.
In the 59th minute,
John Penas found
Sebastian Gaese near the right post. The second-year from Germany then headed it back towards the middle and watched as Cohen fired into the net. Five minutes later, Brylka hit a low liner to
Atli Hrafnkelsson who finished from the left post. That pushed the score to 4-1.
The Lords kept their foot on the gas for one more tally in the 67th minute.
Aidan Schoellkopf picked up a great pass from Hrafnkelsson along the right side and the sophomore scored in the right corner.
In the second half alone, Kenyon out-shot Oberlin 22-1.
