Lords come up short against Alfred

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A tough shooting day paired with a last-second shot resulted in a 63-60 loss for Kenyon College (5-5) on Monday against Alfred University during the Land of Magic Classic hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

A day after shooting 50 percent versus Lycoming, Kenyon managed a 36.8-percent clip (21-57) against the Saxons. The Lords relied heavily on the three-point shot, but hit just 8-of-28 (28.6).

Carter Powell scored a team-high 18 points and tied for the team lead with six boards. Fellow senior Ryan O'Neil added 12 points, five assists and three steals to round out Kenyon's best efforts.

Alfred had its way inside early on, attaining a 12-6 lead as four of its players scored shots from the paint. On the flip side for the Lords, they hit just two of 10 from the field.

Despite the slow start, Kenyon hung around as the Saxons were unable to extend their lead. The Lords pulled to within one (19-18) at the 5:58 mark after three-point makes from Powell and Nick Lewis. A sequence later, Lewis tied the game at 19 with a free throw, paving the way for Kenyon to take its first lead.

A possession after Lewis's make, Christian Watanabe found a streaking Ugnius Zilinskas along the left side and the junior finished the layup, giving the Lords their first advantage, 21-20. That lead was short-lived, though, as the Saxons went back in front two possessions later on a Cole Eells shot. By halftime, Alfred led 25-21.

After the break, the Lords kept pace and eventually retook the lead. Powell continued his strong shooting with back-to-back threes and Kenyon jumped back ahead, 38-36, with 13:53 remaining. That forced a timeout by Alfred and out of the break, the Saxons shot back in front on a three-ball from Adam Enders.

Over the next 11 minutes of action, the score remained extremely close. While Alfred didn't relinquish the lead, it got up no more than five points. The last of those five-point leads came at 2:40 on a layup from Brewster Marshall moving the scoreboard to 54-49.

Following that bucket, the Lords fought back to tie the game. With about 23 seconds remaining, Zilinskas passed to a wide-open O'Neil and the senior buried a three-ball from the right wing to tie the game at 59.

That forced another Alfred timeout, and following the break, Sam Dagon put the Saxons up for good. A Lords double-team in the low post left Dagon open along the wing and he rattled home a three with 4.4 seconds left.

Alfred did not allow Kenyon the chance to take a three-pointer after that by fouling.

Kenyon will be back in action on January 4 when it visits No. 3 (D3Hoops.com) Wittenberg University (9-0) for an NCAC contest.
