GAMBIER, Ohio – Twelve different Ladies basketball players scored on Wednesday night as Kenyon College defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 80-58 in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Tomsich Arena.
Kenyon improved to 16-8 and 10-5 in the conference while OWU dropped its fifth straight game and fell to 10-14 and 5-10 in the NCAC.
Paige Matijasich scored a team-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting while
Ellie Schaub contributed 16 points.
Lane Davis nearly tallied a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds while
Grace Connery scored nine on a trio of three-pointers. As a team, the Ladies were outstanding as they shot at least 48 percent from the field and from downtown.
Defensively, Kenyon was pretty good, too. The Ladies held Ohio Wesleyan to 39-percent shooting and a lowly 26.7 percent from downtown.
Within the first five minutes, the Ladies had played well on both ends of the floor. Kenyon came up with four turnovers and after an and-one conversion from Schaub, the Ladies had a 7-0 advantage. The visitors pulled to within one (10-9) after a three-ball from Molly Delaney, however, Kenyon followed with a 7-2 run.
Heading into the second quarter leading 17-11, the Ladies really opened their lead. Davis' layup at 8:43 moved the scoreboard to 21-11 before a
Jessica Gerber three-pointer from the right wing swished through. That bucket had the home squad up 28-15.
Then, in the final 2:32 of the quarter, Kenyon closed by scoring eight of the next 10 points.
Kiele Anderson's layup with four seconds left had the Ladies ahead, 40-23.
After the halftime intermission, Kenyon's offense put together a 27-point third quarter. A pair of three-balls from Connery and
Jakkie Tomlinson gave the Ladies two 34-point leads in the period, their biggest.
Fourth-quarter action saw coach
Suzanne Helfant empty her bench. Helping contribute to that final margin was
Clare Kelley,
Dahlia Gordon and
Molly Folks.
On Saturday, Kenyon will visit Allegheny College for the regular-season finale. A win will guarantee a home quarterfinal contest in the NCAC Tournament set to start on February 19.
