Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Lords emerge with overtime victory

BEXELY, Ohio – With 33 seconds left on the overtime clock, Kenyon College sophomore Matt Pollack scored the game-winner, propelling the Lords lacrosse team to a thrilling 8-7 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Capital University.

The overtime session was chaotic, with both teams getting multiple chances to claim the win. Kenyon was able to corral the extra period's opening face-off and took two shots, but could not find the back of the net. Capital went the other way in a hurry and fired a shot from the right side, only to have it saved by Kenyon goalie David Metzger. Kenyon regained possession and called a timeout.

Upon returning, with 2:57 left on the clock, the Lords whipped up another shot on goal. This one came right down the middle and was saved by Capital's T.J. Johnson. Like Kenyon, the host Crusaders then worked the ball up the field and called timeout.

With 1:39 remaining, the Crusaders managed another shot and Metzger, again, made a clutch save. Kenyon marched the other way and Will Harrigan returned fire, missing wide to the left with 54 seconds left. The Lords reset their offense and got the ball to Pollack, who was on the right wing. He cut back to the middle, worked around a screen and fired his shot into the lower right corner of the Crusaders' net.

That was Pollack's only goal of the game. He was one of six Kenyon players to record a single-goal game. Senior Joe Woody was the only Lord with multiple goals, scoring twice and assisting twice for a team-high four points.

For Capital (0-1), Luke Wyatt tallied three goals and Ryan Rampi scored twice.

It was the goalkeepers, however, who dictated the flow. Metzger saw 38 shots from Capital and made 13 saves for the Lords. Johnson faced 49 Kenyon shots and made 15 stops.

There were only three occasions throughout the game in which a team held a two-goal lead. The first was early in the game. Kenyon opened play with goals from Declan Curry and Sam Humphrey to move ahead 2-0 before settling on a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Woody's first goal of the game, at the 11:31 mark of the second quarter, gave Kenyon another two-goal lead, but Capital scored three straight to take a 4-3 halftime edge. The Crusaders tacked on another score at the start of the third quarter, gaining their first and only two-goal margin.

Kenyon (2-0) followed up with three straight from Harrigan, Emilio Sosa and Nick Vitale to regain the lead, but Wyatt netted the next two, giving Capital and 7-6 advantage with 10:11 to play.

At the 2:34 mark of the fourth quarter, Woody struck again, scoring an unassisted goal and setting the stage for overtime.
