Davidson’s record helps Wabash top Kenyon

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Jack Davidson broke the previous NCAA Division III record for consecutive free throws made on Saturday as No. 18 (D3Hoops.com) Wabash College pulled away from Kenyon College (1-22, 0-16 NCAC) in a 96-79 North Coast Athletic Conference game at Chadwick Court.

Davidson scored a game-high 22 points, hit all nine of his free throws and extended his free throw streak to 89 consecutive makes. The previous record was 84 held by Kalamazoo College's Dirk Rhinehart from Kalamazoo College over the span of the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 seasons.

Kenyon was led by Elijah Davis who tallied a team-high 19 points and handed out a season-best six assists. Sophomore Ugnius Zilinskas continued his outstanding week with 17 while Christian Watanabe and Carter Powell each scored in double figures. As a team, the Lords put together one of their best offensive showings this year, hitting above 40 percent from the field and deep for just the fourth time.

In the first half, the Little Giants got out to a ten-point lead (16-6) nearly seven minutes in after Kellen Schreiber's jumper in the paint. Kenyon's offense, struggling early, was able to pick it up and pull within two a little later.

Down 25-15, an 8-0 run capped off by a Powell three-ball brought Kenyon's deficit to two, 25-23, with 7:12 remaining. Wabash, though, would fend the Lords off after that and never allowed the visitors to get any closer. By halftime, the Little Giants led 44-34 after two Davidson free throws.

The Lords, once again, were able to chip away at another double-digit deficit to bring the game to within four points.

Davis started a 7-0 stretch with a jumper and ended it with another to bring the tally to 51-47 with 15:23 remaining. On the very next possession, Wabash began its game-clinching run.

Alex Eberhard sank a jumper and over the next 4:35, the Little Giants tallied a massive 21-0 stretch. With 10:38 left, Wabash led 72-47. During that run, the Lords went 0-for-6 and turned it over three times.

There are two games remaining for Kenyon. On Wednesday they will host Ohio Wesleyan University at 8 p.m. and in a week, travel to Allegheny College.
