Lords leave Florida with another win

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – A two-week, 15-game slate at the Gladwin Sports Complex came to a close Friday with the Kenyon College baseball team scoring a 12-4 victory over the College of Mount St. Vincent Dolphins. The Lords now head home with an impressive 11-4 record.

Kenyon posted single runs in the first, third and fifth innings to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore starting pitcher Patrick Craig did more than enough to preserve that cushion. After struggling in his first two outings of the season, Craig found his groove Friday. The lefty went seven scoreless innings while striking out 11. He walked five and allowed four hits, which were all singles.

Craig's performance got the Lords to the eighth inning with that three-run lead intact. From there, the Kenyon offense took over. Singles from Will Sturgeon and Patrick O'Leary were followed up by triples from Matt Contreras and Brent Henderson. All four ended up coming around to score, giving Kenyon a 7-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Dolphins answered with a four-run inning of their own. Kenyon reliever Brag Clegg walked one, hit one and allowed four hits as Mount St. Vincent cut its deficit back down to three runs before O'Leary took over on the mound and got the final out of the inning.

The Lords' recent trend of scoring in bunches in late-game situations continued into the ninth. Jimmy Clark, Alex Gow and O'Leary all singled in the top of the final inning. Henderson blasted a two-run double. Eric DelRosso then stroked a run-scoring single and Clark, who started the inning with a single, hit another one to bring home Henderson. That five-run outburst put a cap on all scoring, as O'Leary returned to the mound to close out the game and earn his first save of the season.

Over their last five games, including this one, the Lords piled up a combined total of 33 runs in their final two innings at the plate.

Henderson and O'Leary led the hit parade Friday. Henderson was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. O'Leary was 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. His season average is now up to .436 (24-for-55). Contreras continued to rake, as well. He was 2-for-3 against the Dolphins and scored three times. He's now batting a team-best .491 (27-for-55) on the season.

Sturgeon, Gow, DelRosso and Clark all joined Contreras with a two-hit game, as the Lords chalked up a total of 18 hits in this one.
