GAMBIER, Ohio – Senior
Cassie Hudson-Heck scored six goals Saturday and powered the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team to a 20-12 non-conference home victory over the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University.
Hudson-Heck was one of seven Kenyon players who scored at least one goal and one of eight who tallied at least on point. Freshman
Maya Fair scored four times, while sophomore
Julia Mahoney scored three times and handed out four assists for a team-high seven points.
While the offense was humming, it was the Kenyon defense that set the tone early against the Yellow Jackets. In Baldwin Wallace's first eight possessions, it failed to clear the ball against the Ladies' defense six times. The Kenyon offense capitalized at the other end, moving ahead 4-2.
Kenyon then went on a 6-0 run that saw Fair and Hudson-Heck each score twice. That spurt put the Ladies ahead 10-2 midway through the first half. Up that point, Baldwin Wallace had just three shot attempts, including two converted free-position shots.
The Ladies twice stretched the lead out to nine goals before settling on a 14-7 advantage at intermission. Over the course of the first half, the Yellow Jackets had more turnovers (14) than shots (9), while Kenyon piled up 28 shots and won 13 of 22 draw controls.
Early in the second half, Baldwin Wallace scored three straight and pulled within five, but that 15-10 score would be as close as the Yellow Jackets would get. Kenyon followed up with its own 3-0 run and closed out the game by out-scoring Baldwin Wallace 5-2 over the final 22 minutes of play.
The Ladies ended up with massive advantages in shots (52-22), groundballs (33-18) and draw controls (24-10).
Baldwin Wallace scored five of its first seven goals on free-position shots. In the second half, however, the Yellow Jackets were 0-for-5 on free-position shots. Savanna Jaekle, Maddie Ray, Hannah Albrechta each scored three times and, together, accounted for all five Baldwin Wallace free-position goals.
Kenyon got additional offensive output from
Lucy Somers, who scored twice and assisted twice.
Avery Morgan also scored twice, as did
Maggie Grabowski, who also piled up 14 draw controls.
The win moved Kenyon to 2-2, while the loss was a first for Baldwin Wallace, which slipped to 2-1.
