SEWANNE, Tenn. – For the third time in five games, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team scored 20 or more goals. Tuesday night was the latest occurrence, as the Ladies thumped the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers, 22-10, during a neutral-site game at The University of the South.
Kenyon (3-2) is now averaging 16.0 goals per game, while allowing opponents an average of just 8.6 goals per game.
Against the Panthers (2-5), Kenyon senior
Lucy Somers recorded a team-high eight points on four goals and four assists. Senior
Cassie Hudson-Heck and junior
Avery Morgan both notched seven points on five goals and two assists. Hudson-Heck's tally gave her 16 goals for the season and 137 for her career, a mark that ranks eighth in program history.
In addition to that trio of Ladies, Kenyon received two goals apiece from
Katelyn Schwartz,
Brett Bearrows and
Maya Fair.
On the other side of the field, six of the 10 Birmingham-Southern goals came from Jade Cox, while Mari Clair Harmon tallied three.
Kenyon took control early in this game and never looked back. The Ladies scored the first five goals and built a 6-1 lead within the first ten minutes of play. Three of those early scores came from Hudson-Heck and two came from Schwartz.
The Ladies outshot the Panthers 24-11 in the first half and cruised to a 14-7 halftime lead.
When second-half play commenced, Kenyon rattled off seven straight goals to seal the deal. Morgan scored twice in that run. Somers scored once and assisted on two others, giving the Ladies an insurmountable 21-8 lead with 8:20 left in the game.
The Ladies ended up with a 34-18 advantage in shots and a 20-14 margin in draw controls. Kenyon junior
Maggie Grabowski had nine of those draws, giving her 44 on the season and 221 for her career.
The game was the first of three for the Ladies at The University of the South. They'll next take on the host Tigers at 4 p.m. on Friday and wrap up the trip Sunday with a contest against Ursinus College.
