GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College freshman
Sara Campagna continued to smack the ball all over the ballpark, but she alone couldn't keep up with the Case Western Reserve University Spartans, who tagged Ladies pitching for a combined 27 runs in a Saturday doubleheader sweep.
The Spartans had 14 hits in 13-2 game-one win and then piled up another 14 hits in a game-two 14-6 victory. The wins improved the Spartans' record to 7-5, while the setbacks dropped Kenyon to 13-7.
Campagna led the Ladies at the plate, going a combined 4-for-6 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI. Through 20 games played this season, Campagna leads the Ladies in batting average (.452), hits (28) and doubles (9).
Campagna's first double of the day led to Kenyon's first run. In the third inning of game one,
Grace Finn drew a one-out walk, Campagna then double, driving Finn to third and setting up a sacrifice fly for
Britny Patterson. Kenyon trailed just 2-1 at that point.
In the bottom of the third, Case erupted for five runs to blow the game open. A two-run homer from Nicole Carty was the big shot of the inning.
The Spartans later put the game away with a six-run fourth inning that included a bases-clearing double from Sydney Wagner.
Kenyon's second run of the game came in the top of the fifth, when Campagna doubled home
Bella Albrecht.
Game two went a little better for the Kenyon offense, which started off with an unearned run in the first inning.
Clare McMahon then doubled and scored in the second inning.
The Spartans had an answer for both of those runs and then put a five-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.
Now trailing 7-2, Kenyon still had some fight left. In the top of the fourth inning, the Ladies bounced back with four runs.
Emily Pater got aboard via an error.
Grace Pilz doubled and McMahon stroked an RBI single. Albrecht then ripped a double to score two. She later scored the Ladies' last run on a double steal.
Albrecht finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. McMahon, Pilz and
Nicole Bishay each had two-hit days for the Ladies.
Kenyon's fourth-inning rally made it a one-run game, but Case had yet another big inning, putting six on the board in the bottom of the fifth.
Saturday's games were originally schedule to be played at Case, but due to weather concerns in Cleveland, the doubleheader was switched to Kenyon's campus with the Ladies playing the role of the visiting team.
