NAPLES, Fla. – The Kenyon Ladies offense was once again on fire on Monday as the team earned two wins against Penn State University Altoona and Albion College at North Collier Regional Park. Kenyon won by run rule against the Lions, 13-4, before handing the Britons an 11-7 defeat.
GAME ONE
Kenyon scored in all but one inning as it cranked out 12 hits and 13 runs against the Lions.
Sophomore
Grace Finn led the game off with a solo shot to right field before the Ladies extended their lead to 3-0 in the second after a two-run homer from
Grace Pilz.
In the bottom of the first, the Lions nearly tied the game on a single from Sidney Lewis, however right fielder
Bella Albrecht made the throw home to get Haley Giedroc tagged.
Down 3-0, Penn State Altoona responded with a two-run homer in the second before Kenyon added 10 more runs in the third and fourth innings combined.
In the third frame,
Nicole Bishay brought home
Sara Campagna on an infield single before
Emily Buckwalter's RBI double plated
Britny Patterson. In the next at-bat, Pilz drove in another run on a groundout and Albrecht followed with a run-scoring single to right field.
The fourth inning provided Kenyon a game-clinching swing. After Bishay drew a bases-loaded walk, Buckwalter cranked a grand slam to left field. That was Kenyon's third homer of the game and it tied the single-game program record set five previous times.
By game's end, Buckwalter had gone 2-for-3 with five RBI while Finn, Patterson and Bishay each recorded multiple hits. In the circle,
Austen Whibley got Kenyon out of a few jams and improved to 2-0.
GAME TWO
Albion got the first lead of the game and benefitted from several Kenyon errors but the Ladies' bats remained hot as they won 11-7.
The Britons opened the affair with three singles, the last of which came off the bat of Kacy Rossi and allowed two to score. Freshman pitcher
Emily Pater settled down after that and retired nine of the next 11 batters she faced and in that span, Kenyon got in front for good.
In the home half of the first, Buckwalter drilled a one-run double to cut the deficit to 2-1.
An inning later, Kenyon plated a half-dozen to take control. Highlighting the inning was Campagna's two-run two-bagger that pushed
Kathryn Riggs and
Kassie Rimel across home.
Kenyon added a run in the third before Albion mounted a slight comeback.
Down 8-2, the Britons scored four unearned runs following a throwing error from the Kenyon infield. With the bases loaded and two out, Camille Roloff singled to right field and brought the tally to 8-4. Two batters later, Estacia Martinez dropped a shot down the left field line pushing across two more.
That prompted a pitching change for the Ladies and from there on out, Albion threatened just twice more.
In the home half of the fourth, Pilz gave the Ladies a little breathing room as she smoked a three-run shot over the left field fence. Kenyon led 11-6 at that point.
An inning later, the Britons had bases loaded and a blooper from Roloff appeared to reach no-man's land. However, a great hustle play from Rimel in left field saw the newcomer make the catch ending the inning.
The Britons were able to add just one more run after that, on a double-play ball that ended the sixth while pushing Lauren Beougher across home.
Kenyon had four different players record hits including Rimel, Patterson, Pilz and
Olivia Hurley. Earning the win in the circle was Bishay, a freshman. She tossed 3.1 innings, allowed just one run and induced five fly-outs.
The Ladies have tomorrow off but will return to action on March 6 at 9 a.m. against Elms College at CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers.
