Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Ladies pull through against Tigers, 11-6

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Kenyon Ladies lacrosse team overcame terrible playing conditions and pulled away from the Sewanee Tigers in the second half to notch an 11-6 road win at Puett Field on Friday. Kenyon improved to 4-2 while the hosts dropped its record to 6-2.

Rain, fog and a 32-minute lightning delay helped cause a very slow offensive game.

The two teams combined for a whopping 75 turnovers and 71 ground balls. Plus, Sewanee, who entered the game with the 32nd-ranked scoring offense, attained just six goals. That was the fewest the Tigers had scored all year.

Kenyon's defense had a play in that six-goal output, too. The Ladies tallied 24 caused turnovers, the most since a 26-spot against Wittenberg University on April 27, 2005. In goal, Carina Barnes notched seven saves.

Offensively, the Ladies did not get on the scoreboard until the 16:20 mark of the first half when Julia Mahoney found senior Lucy Somers. That tally brought the score to 2-1, Tigers.

Sewanee added another goal before the Ladies found some rhythm. Maggie Grabowski, Maya Fair and Cassie Hudson-Heck scored three-straight and helped Kenyon get in front, 4-3. The Tigers responded with goals from Sarah Strand and Temple Moore before Ladies midfielder Avery Morgan tied the game at 5-5 with a shot 54 seconds before halftime.

After the break, Anna Comer put the home team up again, 6-5. However, Sewanee found nothing else the rest of the affair.

Several minutes after Comer's goal, the Ladies tied it up. With the shot clock dwindling down, Somers drove from the left, spun around a defender and fired from in front of the net. Less than a minute later, Fair delivered a pass to Hudson-Heck and the fourth-year attack scored to put the Ladies up for good.

Sewanee had a couple of good looks after that but one hit the post and another from Bridget McConville was saved by Barnes.

Kenyon closes its three-game road swing in the state of Tennessee with a contest on Sunday against Ursinus College at 1 p.m.
