FORT PIERCE, Fla. – In the first game of Thursday's doubleheader, the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen picked up a 7-3 win and ended the Kenyon College Lords' win streak at three. In the second game, the Lords returned the favor, winning 7-2 and halting the Dutchmen's win streak at seven in a row.
In the opener, the Lords were limited to six hits and all three of the runs they scored were unearned. Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, Kenyon notched its first two runs and took its first lead. Leadoff man
Will Sturgeon got on base via error and moved to third on a passed ball. A single from
Matt Contreras scored Sturgeon and, later, a double from
Patrick O'Leary scored Contreras.
Lebanon Valley (7-1) then tied the game in the top of the fourth inning and took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning. That inning was the last for Kenyon starter
Patrick Craig, who gave up five earned runs on six hits and a couple of walks.
Lebanon Valley committed four errors in the game and the two that occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning led to one more unearned run for Sturgeon and the Lords.
Alex Gow and O'Leary both had a pair of hits for Kenyon in game one.
In game two, Kenyon chalked up 10 hits with eight players recording at least one.
Ryan Page, who took over the leadoff spot, and
Eric DelRosso, batting out of the sixth spot, were the only Lords with multi-hit games. Page was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. DelRosso was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Page singled and scored in the first. The Kenyon bats then blew the game open with a five-run second inning. That frame, prolonged by two more Lebanon Valley errors, included singles from Page, DelRosso and Sturgeon. Page, Gow, O'Leary and
Paul Siciliano were each credited with an RBI.
That was more than enough run support for O'Leary, Kenyon's game-two starter. He wound up pitching all seven innings to record his first win of the season. He struck out two and allowed just two earned runs on five hits and a walk.
Kenyon (4-2) is slated for another doubleheader tomorrow morning beginning at 9:30. The Lords will play two seven-inning games against the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays (2-5).
