GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon women's lacrosse team extended its school-record winning streak to 11 games after it edged Oberlin College 16-15 in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at McBride Field. The Ladies improved to 12-2 and 5-0 in the NCAC for just the second time in the NCAC era.
Additionally, the team clinched a berth in the upcoming NCAC Tournament for the first time since 2013.
Tuesday's game did not come easy for Kenyon, especially on possession control. The Ladies had 26 turnovers, their most since committing 36 against Sewanee on March 8. Plus, Oberlin's defense shut down leading scorer
Cassie Hudson-Heck who was held to one goal.
Despite that, Kenyon got contributions from a few others.
Avery Morgan scored a game-high six goals while newcomer
Maya Fair contributed five.
Lucy Somers added a trio of goals and assists while
Maggie Grabowski scored once, corralled four ground balls and 11 draw controls. That total moved her career mark to 282 draw controls, passing former great Jane Symmes '16 who accumulated 277.
A little over five minutes in, the Ladies led 5-2 after Somers found Fair in a man-down situation. However, Oberlin came right back to the game at 5-5 as Ali Wessel, Eliza Amber and Leah Crowther all scored within a 2:16 span.
The Ladies then went back in front, 9-5, as Morgan and Fair each scored twice from the 21:12 mark to 15:41. With a little breathing room, Kenyon stayed in front the rest of the half and took an 11-9 lead into the break.
In the second, the Yeowomen fought back once again. After Somers fed Fair at the 20:36 mark, pushing the score to 14-10, Oberlin's Kyra Aviles led the return charge. She scored twice and Sabrina Deleonibus and Tess Siciliano tallied the other pair to tie the game at 14.
Like she did last year versus Oberlin, Morgan pushed Kenyon in front for good shortly after the visitors tied it. Morgan raced by the defense and fired right down the middle on a breakaway with 13:26 remaining.
Kenyon added one more goal from Fair before Oberlin nearly came back again. Down 16-14, Deleonibus scored with seven minutes left after a Kenyon turnover.
Then, with 1:17 remaining, the Ladies turned the ball over again in their defensive half which allowed Oberlin another possession. However, an errant pass out of bounds from Hayley Drapkin gave the ball back to Kenyon and Grabowski raced down the field and ran out the clock.
The Ladies will hit the road on Saturday for their next game. They will play DePauw University at 12 p.m. for another NCAC contest.
