Ladies inch closer to NCAC Tournament berth

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies split Wednesday's North Coast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Oberlin College and moved their record to 20-16 and 7-5 in NCAC play.  A single win in the upcoming series against Hiram College on April 27 will clinch a berth in the NCAC's four-team tourney for the first time since the 2013 season.

GAME ONE

A strong start early propelled the Ladies (20-16, 7-5 NCAC) to a comfortable game-one win as they defeated Oberlin 7-2.

Back-to-back doubles from Grace Finn and Sara Campagna opened the door to a 2-0 Ladies lead in the first. On the defensive front, pitcher Emily Pater continued her strong play as she limited the Yeowomen to just a pair of hits in the first three frames.

Kenyon's 2-0 lead extended to 5-0 in the third. Following singles from Campagna and Britny Patterson, an error from Oberlin's second baseman loaded the bases. Pater followed with an RBI single before Lauren Graf drove in Patterson on a sacrifice fly. Newcomer Nicole Bishay then got into the mix with a run-scoring single to right-center field.

Oberlin cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the fifth as Anna Slebonick drove in two on a two-out single. That, though, would be all Oberlin could muster as Pater earned her 12th win of the season as she induced 11 groundouts and eight more fly balls.

The Ladies tacked on two more runs in the sixth as Campagna and Patterson each singled to push across Clare McMahon and Finn.

GAME TWO

It was Oberlin that had a fast start in the nightcap and it resulted in an 8-2 Ladies loss. The Yeowomen scored five times in the first two frames to get all the run support they needed.

In the first, Vianca Dagnino took a 1-1 pitch to right field and drove in Slebonick on a sacrifice fly. An inning later, Slebonick's double drove in two before she scored from third during a steal attempt. That pushed the score to 5-0.

Kenyon responded with two runs in the third as Pilz and Graf each had run-scoring doubles. However, that would be all the Ladies could get as Oberlin pitcher Emily Tucci allowed just two Ladies to reach scoring position the rest of the way.

Oberlin's final runs came in the sixth as Emma Downing had a bases-clearing double.

The Ladies will return to action this Saturday when Hiram College (11-22, 6-8 NCAC) visits for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
