GAMBIER, Ohio – The DePauw University Tigers held the Kenyon College Ladies scoreless in a make-up North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) doubleheader on Sunday. The Tigers held tight for a 2-0 game-one win and then rolled to an 8-0 six-inning victory in game two.
Those results, combined with others from around the conference, solidified the seeding for the upcoming NCAC four-team, postseason tournament. Top-seeded DePauw (26-11, 16-0 NCAC) will again face Kenyon (22-18, 9-7 NCAC), the No. 4-seeded team, in the first round of the double-elimination format. The other first-round game will pit No. 2-seeded The College of Wooster (25-11, 12-4 NCAC) against No. 3-seeded Denison University (20-12, 11-5 NCAC). All tournament games will be played at DePauw.
Tiger pitchers controlled Sunday's games. In game one, Julia Bork went the distance and held the Ladies to just three hits. She walked one and struck out five to improve her season record to 3-2. Kenyon's hits were a double in the third inning from
Grace Finn and singles in the seventh inning from
Grace Pilz and
Nicole Bishay.
Kenyon received a good pitching performance, too. Junior
Keely Sweet went seven innings and gave up the two runs on seven hits and two walks. The Tigers capitalized on a Kenyon error in the second inning to score an unearned run off Sweet. Then, in the fifth, the only other run of the game was scored on a solo home run struck by Ali Dierks.
For DePauw, the pitching only got better in game two. Riley Magoon took a perfect game into the fifth inning, but Bishay broke it up with a soft single to left field. Magoon finished the inning, departing with six strikeouts and improving her season record to 6-0. Cami Henry closed out the sixth inning for the Tigers by striking out the side.
Tori Rogers got the pitching start for Kenyon in game two and she went two-and-two-thirds innings.
Sophia Gottdiener relieved her finished off the game. Combined, the two pitchers allowed just six hits and two walks, but the Ladies' defense let them down. Four Kenyon errors turned into six unearned runs and allowed the Tigers to finish game two via the eight-run rule.
The doubleheader was a originally scheduled for March 30, but postponed due to poor weather.
