Pilz leads hit parade at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Kenyon College softball team unleashed the big bats Tuesday and clobbered the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University during a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Sagan Field. The Ladies amassed 27 hits on the day, won game one 14-5 and then finished things off with a five-inning, 11-3, run-rule victory in game two.

Throughout the day, the top four in the Ladies' batting order pummeled Ohio Wesleyan pitchers. Grace Finn, batting leadoff, was a combined 8-for-9 with six runs scored. No. 2 hitter Sara Campagna was 3-for-7 and No. 3 hitter Britny Patterson was 6-for-8 with a home run, four runs scored and five RBI. Finally, batting cleanup, Grace Pilz was 6-for-8 with four doubles, a home run, four runs scored and eight RBI.

As a team, the Ladies posted a .529 batting average for the day. That production halted an extended losing streak, improved the Ladies' overall record to 15-13 and evened out their NCAC record at 2-2.

Right from the start, the Ladies took care of business in the batter's box. Pilz hit RBI doubles in each of the first two innings of game one, as Kenyon built a quick 5-0 lead. Two innings later, Pilz cracked another run-scoring double to push Kenyon ahead 6-0.

Ohio Wesleyan scored twice in the fourth, but Kenyon answered with three in the fifth, one on the sixth and four more in the seventh. The big hit in the seventh was Pilz's three-run homer to left field, giving her a conference-best seven home runs on the season.

In game two, Kenyon led 2-1 after three innings of play. The floodgates then re-opened in the fourth, as the Ladies scored four times. Three of those four runs came on Patterson's three-run home run to left center.

In the fifth inning, with two outs, the Ladies rattled off seven consecutive hits, scored five times and pulled ahead 11-2. During that streak, Campagna stroked a two-run single and Pilz laced a two-run double.

Ohio Wesleyan (7-19, 1-5 NCAC) scored once in the bottom of the fifth, but that was not enough to stop the application of the eight-run mercy rule.

Kenyon pitchers Emily Pater and Austen Whibley were able to work without much pressure, thanks to the offensive output. Pater won game one. She tossed six innings, struck out three and allowed three runs on 11 hits and a walk. Whibley cruised in game two, allowing just two earned runs in five innings. She fanned two, allowed eight hits and didn't walk a batter.
