Lords hit 20-win mark in NCAC split with Gators

GAMBIER, Ohio – Wednesday at McCloskey Field, the Kenyon College baseball team split a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with the Allegheny College Gators. In doing so, the Lords moved their overall record to 20-15 and ensured themselves of a winning record for the season.

In addition to reaching the 20-win mark, the Lords updated their NCAC mark to 7-9 with two conference contests against The College of Wooster remaining on the schedule. In the other dugout, the split put Allegheny's records at 19-5 overall and 8-7 in NCAC play.

Allegheny bombarded a depleted Kenyon pitching staff to win game one, 18-9, but the Lords responded in game two, holding the Gators to seven hits in a 9-3 victory.

With 18 runs scored in the two games, Kenyon had plenty of standouts in the batter's box. Junior Patrick O'Leary led the way, going a combined 5-for-9 with four runs scored and six RBI. Among his hits were two doubles and his 10th home run of the season, two short of the program's single-season record.

Eric DelRosso, also a junior, was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Senior Matt Contreras went 5-for-10 with a run and three RBI, while sophomore Ryan Page was 4-for-10 with four runs scored, three RBI and his second home run of the season.

In game one, Allegheny jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings. Kenyon starter Zach Elsawy got through a one-two-three fourth inning, but that was the end of the line for him.

At the plate, the Lords scored once in the first, once in the second and five times in the bottom of the fourth inning. That outburst in the fourth, which put Kenyon ahead 7-6, was powered by four straight hits from Page, DelRosso, Alex Gow and O'Leary.

Ross Scheinberg came on in relief to protect the team's one-run lead, but Allegheny batters belted a two-run and a three-run homer off him to take an 11-7 advantage in the top of the fifth.

The Lords got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on Page's two-run homer, but they would get no closer. The Gators went on to secure the game-one victory with a seven-run eighth inning.

Kenyon pitchers turned things around in game two. Starter Zach Frizzera, a freshman, tossed the first four innings and gave up three runs on six hits. After that, junior Charlie Bailey took over in relief and was lights-out. He earned the victory by throwing four scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit and one walk.

The Lords had a 4-3 lead when Baily entered the game in the top of the fifth inning. The bats then provided him some breathing room with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth. In the fifth, Kenyon runs scored on RBI hits from O'Leary and Alexander Hoskins. In the sixth, all three runs scored on O'Leary's bomb to right center.

Back in the first inning, the Lords got RBI hits from Contreras and Andrew Rabinowitz. In the second inning, Jimmy Clark doubled home Jake Brown to give the Lords a 4-2 lead, one they would not relinquish.
