DELAWARE, Ohio – The Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops proved for the second time this season that they have the Kenyon College Lords' number. Thursday, in the semifinal round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament, Ohio Wesleyan raced out to a 9-1 lead en route to a 25-10 victory.
The game unfolded in similar fashion to the teams' regular-season contest on March 23 in which Ohio Wesleyan bolted to a 10-1 halftime lead on its way to a 17-7 win.
The Thursday loss ended the Lords' season with an 11-6 record, the team's best record over the last three seasons and the fourth time it reached or surpassed the 10-win mark in head coach
Doug Misarti's time.
Junior
Sam Humphrey led the Kenyon attack with three goals, giving him 32 for the season. Senior
Nick Vitale scored once and assisted twice. He finishes off the season with a team-high 75 points and a program single-season record 57 assists.
Sophomore
Will Harrigan tallied a goal and an assist, while five different players accounted for the other five Kenyon goals.
The Lords struggled just setting up their offense. In the first quarter alone, they lost eight of 11 face-offs and failed to clear the ball three times. Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan scored the first four goals of the game.
Kenyon's first score came from
Matt Pollack in a man-up situation at the 8:43 mark of the first quarter. The Battling Bishops, however, scored the next six goals to take a 10-1 lead early in the second quarter.
The Lords then got a shot in the arm from Humphrey and Harrigan, who scored back-to-back goals within a 50-second span, but again, Ohio Wesleyan had an answer and scored nine times in the last 12 minutes of the half to take a convincing 20-3 halftime lead.
The Battling Bishops ended up out-shooting the Lords, 54-38. They were also a near-prefect 16-of-17 on clearing opportunities, while Kenyon ended up at 6-of-13.
Ohio Wesleyan (11-7) advances to play No. 11-ranked Denison University (15-2) in Sunday's NCAC Tournament final. Denison got to the final by defeating The College of Wooster, 17-8, in Thursday's other semifinal game.
