DANVILLE, Ky. – The Kenyon College Ladies field hockey team struggled to get its offense in gear during Friday's season-opening loss at Centre College. The Ladies managed four shots on goal and fell to the host Colonels, 3-0.
Centre put the Ladies defense to the test early, launching 17 shots in the first two quarters of play. The flood of shots in the Kenyon zone never really allowed the Ladies offense to pose a threat.
Kenyon sophomore goalkeeper
Suzy Deems made a pair of saves in the first quarter and nine more in the second. With the help of the Kenyon defense, she was able to keep the Colonels off the board for the first 26 minutes of play.
Before the teams could reach the half, the Centre offense broke through with goals from Savannah Elpers and Megan Coomes. The goals came three minutes apart and pushed the Colonels into the break with a 2-0 lead.
When the third quarter commenced, Kenyon gave freshman goalkeeper
Payton Doan a shot in front of the cage. She yielded another goal to Elpers within the first two minutes of play, but settled down after that and made two saves to keep the Colonels scoreless the rest of the way.
When the Ladies were able to mount some offensive pressure, it was senior
Hannah Sklar and freshman
Bella Kern who posted two shots each. All four of those shots, however, were turned aside by Centre goalkeeper Kristen Mulcahy, who played all 60 minutes and recorded the shutout win.
The Ladies will give it another go Saturday, when they return to the playing surface at Centre to play a 1 p.m. neutral-site contest against Washington College.
