Freshmen lead Ladies to first win

DANVILLE, Ky. – After being blanked in Friday's season opener, the Kenyon College field hockey team turned the tables Saturday at Centre College and recorded a 2-0 neutral-site victory over the Washington College Shorewomen.

Kenyon (1-1) logged its first win of the season on second-half goals from a pair of freshmen. In the third quarter, Bella Kern tipped in a pass from classmate Carolyn Herbosa. That goal was scored in the game's 44th minute. About 12 minutes later, in fourth-quarter action, Hannah Hartshorn tacked on an unassisted insurance goal. It doubled the Ladies' lead and secured the Kenyon victory.

In the early stages of the game, neither team mounted much of attack. In the second quarter, however, Kenyon got its offense going, launching six shots to just one for Washington (0-1). Kenyon also held a 4-1 edge in first-half penalty corners, but the teams went into the halftime break locked in a scoreless tie.

Overall, Kenyon outshot the Shorewomen, 15-12.

In goal, sophomore Suzy Deems got the start for the Ladies and made one save in 30 minutes of work. Freshman Payton Doan played the second half and earned the win while making four saves in her 30 minutes of work.

Next up for Kenyon will be a return home to play the first-ever game on the field at Benson Bowl. That contest will take place Saturday, as the Ladies entertain Washington and Lee University for a noon start.
