GAMBIER, Ohio – The Field at Benson Bowl officially opened for business Saturday with the Kenyon College field hockey team playing host to the Generals of Washington and Lee University. The Ladies produced a 16-11 advantage in shots taken, but it was the Generals who walked off the field with a 1-0 victory.
The Field at Benson Bowl was constructed over the last several months with a location southwest of the Kenyon Athletic Center, just across Duff Street. The field is now the home site for Kenyon's field hockey team in the fall and for both the Lords and Ladies lacrosse teams in the spring.
The Ladies did what they could to try to notch a win in Saturday's historic match. Not only did they out-shoot the Generals, but they also earned an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners. Over the last quarter of play alone, Kenyon's sense of urgency led to five penalty corner and six shots.
The Washington and Lee defense, however, would not crack. The Generals blocked five Kenyon shots and goalkeeper Sara Amil made seven saves to preserve the shutout.
The game's lone goal was registered late in the first quarter of play. Washington and Lee's Olivia Hewitt inserted a penalty corner to the top of the circle. It was met there by Lauren Paolano, who wound up and fired her shot past goalkeeper
Suzy Deems and into the Kenyon cage.
The victory moved Washington & Lee's record to 1-2, while the loss made Kenyon's record the same. The Ladies have little time to dwell on the outcome. They'll hit the road tomorrow for their next game, a noon battle at Washington and Jefferson College.
