ERIE, Pa – Newcomers
Lara O'Callaghan and
Chloe Webb scored goals and the Kenyon Ladies defense stepped up as the team defeated Penn State University Behrend 2-0 on Saturday in a women's soccer match. Kenyon evened its record (1-1) with the win.
A day after missing some chances in the final third against Baldwin Wallace, the Ladies bounced back against the Lions.
In the 34th minute, O'Callaghan broke a scoreless tie. Following a scrum near the top of the 18-yard box,
Samantha Hayes retrieved the loose ball, drove down the left end line and passed to a wide-open O'Callaghan who tallied her first collegiate goal.
That 1-0 lead would remain the rest of the half. On the defensive side, Kenyon held up well against the Lions, allowing just a single shot to the home team.
After the break, the Ladies found their second goal from Webb. The newcomer beat two defenders right by the top of the 18 and fired a left-footed shot.
Over the remainder of the match, PSU-Behrend found just one shot on target. That came with less than five minutes left from Bella Sestito. Her attempt was saved, though, by freshman
Erika Freiberg who earned the win in goal for Kenyon.
Next Saturday, September 7, the Ladies will return for their first home match of the season. They will play Adrian College, a squad that defeated Kenyon 4-1 last season.
