DANVILLE, Ky. – Kenyon College and Centre College have played some tough soccer matches in recent memory, and Saturday night during the Bob Allen Nissan Classic was no different. By game's end, the Lords (5-1) had prevailed by a 1-0 score and were victorious for the fourth straight contest.
Each team had plenty of shots in the first half, although, quality attempts were few.
About 28 minutes into action,
Mac Nardiello-Smith's drive into the box resulted in a foul and subsequent penalty kick. Fellow classmate
Johan Johannsson took the shot, but his attempt deflected off the post.
Just a couple minutes after, a cross came to junior defender
Collyn Carpenter but his header went high.
Then just before the break in the 41st minute,
Ian McInturf saved a shot by Michael Vogt within five yards of the net.
In the second half, the Lords' defense was superb. They gave up just one shot to the host Colonels.
With Kenyon thwarting Centre's attack, the Lords found all the scoring needed in the 51st minute.
Scott Upton fired from the left side and his shot ricocheted into the right corner of the net. It was the sophomore's team-leading third goal of the season.
The Lords will look to keep their momentum on September 18 when they visit Marietta College for a 7:30 p.m. match.
