CLEVELAND, Ohio – A second-half goal cut Kenyon College's deficit in half Wednesday night, but that was as close as the Ladies soccer team would get to the No. 10-ranked Case Western Reserve University Spartans, who used a pair of goals from Christina Hickson to ring up a 3-1 victory.
Kenyon (3-5) got off to a decent start at DiSanto Field, taking three of the game's first four shots. That, however, was just about all the offense the Ladies could muster in the first half.
In the game's 13th minute, Case (8-0) took advantage of a Kenyon mistake to score the first goal of the game. A ball played back to Kenyon goalkeeper
Erika Freiberg was misplayed, allowing Hickson to pounce and fire it into the Kenyon net.
At the start of the second half, the Spartans peppered the Ladies' goal with seven shots in the first ten minutes. The last of those shots came off the right foot of Anika Washburn, who doubled the Spartans lead with a shot from about 27 yards out.
Trailing 2-0 at that point, Kenyon didn't quit. In the game's 60th minute, the Ladies used a free kick to erase their zero on the scoreboard. Junior
Caroline McNeer lobbed the kick a few yards short of the Case goal. As the kick was in the air, junior
Kiele Anderson broke free, played the ball off her body and directed it over the goal line for her first score of the season.
Just 14 seconds after that, the Spartans quelled the Kenyon momentum with another goal from Hickson. Spinning to her right around a Kenyon defender, Hickson used her left foot to slide the Spartans' third goal into the right side of the Kenyon goal.
Overall, Case tripled-up Kenyon in shots, 21-7. Freiberg wound up making eight saves, while her counterpart, Lauren Unterborn made five saves for Case.
The contest marked the end of the Ladies' non-conference schedule. They start their North Coast Athletic Conference slate Saturday with a game at Allegheny College.
