Ladies claim NCAC opener over Oberlin

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon Ladies volleyball team shook off a slow start to win in four sets against Oberlin College on Friday night in North Coast Athletic Conference action. Kenyon put a halt to its seven-match losing streak and earned a conference-opening win for the fourth straight season.

Oberlin's (7-7, 0-2 NCAC) defensive effort in the opening set led to a 25-14 victory. The Yeowomen held Kenyon to a .093 attack percentage while collecting 26 digs, the most of any set. Trailing 7-5, the visitors went on a 16-4 stretch to seize command. During that run, four different Yeowomen attained multiple kills.

In the second, Kenyon (3-9, 1-0 NCAC) came roaring back with the help of Lauren Limbach and Elyse Davidson. Each had four kills in the stanza while Limbach gave the Ladies their biggest early lead (15-9) before Maleah Miller extended it to 18-11. The Ladies were much better offensively, hitting .308 while ending the set (25-16) on a Davidson kill.

Third-set action turned out to be the most competitive. Oberlin was up 4-0, however, Kenyon settled down to get back in it. Down 9-6, the home squad reeled off a 9-2 run capped off by a Haley Witschey kill which gave Kenyon a 15-11 advantage. Competition remained tight as Oberlin rallied to take a 16-15 lead after a block error by the Ladies. Then, with the score tied at 19, an Oberlin error and kill by Miller pushed the scoreboard to 21-19, Kenyon. After that, Oberlin never tied it again.

Kenyon wrapped up the match with a dominant fourth set. The Ladies had six blocks, held the Yeowomen to a 0.30 attack percentage and watched as Witschey, Limbach and Mackenzie Bruzzio each tallied multiple kills. The score was tied at 5-5, but the Ladies responded with a massive 15-4 run with blocks along the way from Paige Milhon, Eras Yager, Davidson, Miller and Bruzzio. The Ladies eventually won, 25-16.

Tomorrow, the team will travel to Denison University (9-5) for a 1 p.m. NCAC match.
