GAMBIER, Ohio – Seniors
Maleah Miller,
Mackenzie Bruzzio and
Haley Witschey powered Kenyon College's attack Tuesday night and led the Ladies volleyball team to a 3-1 win over the Bluffton University Beavers in the home opener at Tomsich Arena.
The three seniors combined for seven blocks and 29 of the team's 40 kills, as the Ladies posted a 25-15, 25-20, 18-25, 25-19 victory to even up their season record at 2-2.
Miller smashed eight kills in 16 attempts without an error. She also racked up five digs and four blocks. Bruzzio logged a team-high 12 kills, while adding 12 digs and four blocks. Witschey tacked on nine kills and a pair of blocks.
The Ladies dominated the first set, rolling out to a lead of 6-1. Bluffton then made a bit of a run, but never pulled closer than three points. After the teams traded service errors, Kenyon held an 11-7 lead. Freshman
Jac Cousineau then served up a Kenyon 8-0 run that contained three kills from Witschey and two from Bruzzio.
Bluffton (1-3) kept the second set a little closer, staying within a couple of points for the majority of play. The Beavers tied things up at 17-17, but a
Tara Ford kill, a Bluffton error and a
Katie Howard ace gave Kenyon enough cushion to win the set.
In set three, Kenyon sent 14 different players to the court as coach
Kendra Mosher tried to get her younger players some valuable game time. Bluffton took advantage of the situation, took the set and extended the match to a fourth frame.
The Ladies regrouped and raced out to a 7-2 lead in that fourth set. Bluffton wouldn't go away, though. The Beavers twice pulled within one point of Kenyon, but that was before another Cousineau serving streak sparked a 6-0 run that gave the Ladies the space they needed. Witschey and Bruzzio each chalked up two kills in the run.
Other key contributors for the Ladies Tuesday night included Howard, who tallied a team-high 15 digs, and Cousineau, who handed out a team-high 16 assists.
The Ladies will now prep for a tough road trip. They'll begin play Friday in the NCAC/MIAA Crossover Challenge, which will be held at Aim High Sports in Lansing, Michigan. The Ladies will face a lineup that includes Albion College, No. 2-ranked Calvin College and No. 17-ranked Hope College.
