Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bishops get in gear, top Lords

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Ohio Wesleyan University (9-5, 4-3 NCAC) shook off an extremely slow start to earn a 69-55 North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball victory against Kenyon College on Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena.

The Lords (5-9, 3-5 NCAC) fell for the fifth straight game in the process.

OWU struggled mightily on the offensive end in the first 11-plus minutes of action; the visitors made just one of their 17 attempts. Despite that, they only trailed the Lords 10-2. For Kenyon, Carter Powell tallied five of the team's 10 points while Kamal Aubakirov added a three-ball at the 14:40 mark to go up eight.

With less than nine minutes left, the Bishops began finding some fluidity.  Starting at 8:47, the visitors scored three straight 3-pointers from Nick Carlson, Gabe Johnson and Jaret Gerber to pull within one, 12-11. A couple possessions later, Bryson Lane's layup tied the game at 16.

Kenyon quickly regrouped as Aubakirov pushed the Lords ahead again, 22-16, on a three from Powell. However, over the last 5:33 of the half, Kenyon's offense did not keep pace with Ohio Wesleyan's. The Bishops hit 6-of-9 from the field while the hosts went 1-of-4 and turned the ball over three times.

With less than 90 seconds left, and the score tied at 26, Jack Clement sank a three-pointer to push OWU ahead, 29-26. Over the final 1:17, the visitors held that advantage before going into the locker room up 32-27.

The Lords aided OWU in the first half, too, as they committed eight turnovers which were turned into 11 points.

In the second half, the Bishops maintained their lead until a push midway through the stanza by Kenyon.

Down 52-42, Elijah Davis provided a spark off the bench to pull the Lords within five, 56-51. He scored eight points during a 9-4 stretch and after his and-one conversion at the 8-minute mark, Kenyon was within two possessions of OWU.

That was the closest Kenyon would get, though, as the visitors scored the next six points to go back up double-digits (62-51) and secure the victory.

Powell led Kenyon with an impressive 14 points, nine rebounds, a career-high four blocks and a game-high four assists. Ugnius Zilinskas added 12 points and seven boards while newcomer Kase Cronin contributed seven points and five rebounds.

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a trip to Wabash College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
