Matijasich dazzles, but Ladies tripped up by Terriers

HIRAM, Ohio – Kenyon College senior Paige Matijasich drained six of her nine three-point attempts and scored 39 points to account for half of the Ladies' output in an 81-78 double-overtime loss at Hiram College on Wednesday night.

Those 39 points were not only a personal career high for Matijasich, but were the second-most points scored in a single game by any player in Ladies' history. Maureen Hirt's 40 points scored against Carnegie Mellon University in the 2011-12 season remain the program record.

Matijasich was 14-of-21 overall and 5-of-7 at the free throw stripe against the host Terriers. She now has 1,262 career points, which pushed her past Morgan Korinek, the Ladies current assistant coach, and into seventh place on Kenyon's all-time scoring leaders list.

Before fouling out with 3:54 remaining in the second overtime, Matijasich also piled up nine rebounds and three assists. However, no matter what Matijasich or the Ladies did Wednesday night, the Terriers would not relent.

After a close first half, the Ladies went ahead by as many as 10 points in the third quarter and by as many as 12 points early in the fourth. Even as regulation drew to a close, the Ladies still appeared to have the win locked up, but the ball bounced Hiram's way a couple of times and the Terriers took full advantage.

Trailing by four with 30 seconds left, the Terriers pulled within one point on a three-pointer from Alainna Conroy with 16 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Ladies botched the inbounds play. Conroy got the steal and fed the ball up to Tashauna Wright, who converted the easy layup to put the Terriers ahead by one with four seconds left.

At the other end of the floor, Matijasich again took control for Kenyon. She drove the lane in the final seconds of play and drew a foul with 0.4 left. She made the first, but missed the second of her two free throws to send the game into the first overtime tied at 63-63.

Kenyon scored seven points in that first overtime period and six of them were tallied on three-pointers from Matijasich. The second of those two swished through the net with 21 seconds on the clock, giving the Ladies a 70-67 lead. Thirteen seconds after that, Wright buried a three-ball for the Terriers and dragged the game into a second overtime knotted at 70-70.

In the second overtime, the two teams traded free throws until Kenyon freshman Katie Orefice drained a three-pointer to give the Ladies a 76-74 lead with just under two minutes to play. Wright then scored five of the game's next seven points to push Hiram to a 79-78 advantage. After a Kenyon turnover and foul, Conroy sank one free throw, extending the Terriers' lead to 80-78 with 14 seconds left.

Kenyon's next possession generated a good look down low, but a potential game-tying layup was missed with three seconds left. That made way for one more Hiram free throw and allowed the Terriers to escape with the win.

In addition to Matijasich's impressive numbers, Kenyon got 13 points and 10 rebounds from junior Ellie Schaub, who was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line. Sophomore Madelyn Anderson tacked on eight points and Orefice scored seven, while sophomore Amanda Carroll contributed seven rebounds for Kenyon, which fell to 6-11 overall and 3-6 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

Wright ended up with 34 points for Hiram, which improved to 5-12 overall and 2-6 in the conference. Cici Bright added 20 points for the Terriers and Conroy finished with 13.
