Tigers slip by Lords, 58-54

GAMBIER, Ohio- The Kenyon College Lords fell to the DePauw University Tigers 58-54 in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) basketball matchup at Tomsich Arena on Saturday afternoon.

DePauw improved their record to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in the NCAC while the Lords fell to 6-11 and 3-7 in conference play.

A back and forth contest, DePauw never led by more than four points before an Elijah Hales three-pointer gave them a six-point lead with 1:56 remaining. That advantage was never relinquished by the visitors.

In the first half, there were five lead changes, with the Lords' scoring led by six points each from forwards Ugnius Zilinskas and Carter Powell, who also collected six rebounds. Powell's three-ball at the 9:25 mark had the home squad up six, 14-8, its biggest margin.

DePauw bounced back to retake the lead at 15-14 after a three-pointer from Ken Decker at 7:58. Then, in the final three minutes of the half, the Tigers outscored the Lords 8-2 and took a 25-24 advantage into the locker room.

The second half saw the Tigers maintain their lead until the 12:14 mark when Zilinskas scored off an Alex Cate steal. At that point, the Lords led 34-33.

Over the next nine minutes, the score was tied on four different occasions, with the last coming at 47-all following a reverse layup from sophomore Elijah Davis. After that, though, DePauw was able to pull away as it hit back-to-back three-pointers from Hales and Nick Felke.

By game's end, the Tigers outscored the Lords 15-0 on second-chance opportunities, and won the rebound battle by nine (36-27).

Zilinskas led the Lords with 15 points and four rebounds while Davis added 14 points and four assists off of the bench.

The Lords will look to bounce back on January 29 at 8 pm when they face Oberlin College on the road.
