GAMBIER, Ohio – After falling by a 57-47 count on December 11, Denison University came back to earn a 61-48 win over Kenyon College on Wednesday night in a North Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Tomsich Arena.
The Big Red used solid second- and third-quarter performances in their win which pumped their record to 10-4 and 4-1 in the NCAC. Zyah Beal led the charge with a team-high 17 points.
For Kenyon (5-9, 2-4 NCAC), it relied heavily on the three-point shot. Of the Ladies' 46 attempts, 25 of those came from distance. Just six of them, though, went in. Senior
Paige Matijasich, once again, proved to be the game's best player. She tallied 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds, both game-highs.
Kenyon got out to a 9-5 lead a little over four minutes in as Matijasich scored seven for the Ladies. However, over the last 5:53 of the quarter, Denison went on a 12-5 run. Addie Buzas tied the game at 9 with a layup before reserve Lily Morris hit a step-back three-ball at 2:56, giving the visitors a 14-11 lead. By the end of the quarter, Denison led 17-14 after a three-pointer from Lauren Turner.
In the second, Denison doubled up the Ladies by scoring 12 points while allowing six. Kenyon hit just 2-of-11 from the field and turned the ball over six times in the quarter. The visitors would go up as many as nine points twice, with the last at 29-20 after a Beal free throw.
At the break, the Ladies had shot just 5-of-22 (22.7).
Following intermission, Kenyon fought back to pull the score to 31-26. At the 7:29 mark, sophomore
Grace Connery drilled a three-pointer on a pass from Matijasich. That would the closest the Ladies got the rest of the way, though.
Denison responded with an 8-0 run capped off by Lauren Longbrake's layup at 5:25. Leading 39-26, the Big Red maintained their double-digit lead the rest of the game.
Next on the schedule for the Ladies is a road date at Allegheny College (6-7, 2-2 NCAC) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
