Ladies take care of Titans in season opener

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team opened its 2020 schedule Saturday with lopsided 19-2 victory over the Westminster College Titans. Kenyon senior Maggie Grabowski and first-year Tatumn Eccleston combined to post nine points in what was the first lacrosse game played on the Field at Benson Bowl.

Grabowski scored the game's first goal and finished off her afternoon with four points on three goals and an assist. Eccleston assisted on three first-half goals and two more second-half goals to lead all players with five points.

The Kenyon offense had no problem carving through the Westminster zone. Within the first 22 minutes of the contest, the Ladies owned a 10-0 lead. Grabowski had two of those first 10 goals, as did first-year Julia Losey.

Westminster finally broke through with its first goal 23:40 into the contest. Kenyon senior Avery Morgan answered that tally and the Ladies went into halftime with a comfortable 11-1 advantage.

In the second half, Kenyon rattled off eight straight goals before the Titans scored their second goal with a little more than a minute left on the clock.

In all, Kenyon had 11 different players record points. Ten scored at least one goal. Losey and Morgan matched Grabowski's final tally of three goals, while Julia Mahoney, Ella Murphy and Brett Bearrows each scored twice as Kenyon outshout Westminster 38-8.

On the defensive side, the Ladies forced 23 turnovers and disrupted nine of the Titans' 15 clearing attempts. Behind the defense, first-years Tori Simon and Delaney Gallagher split time in the Kenyon goal. Simon played the first 30 minutes and Gallagher played the last 30 minutes. Both made one save and yielded one goal.

Kenyon now faces five straight road games, beginning with next Saturday's contest at John Carroll University. The Ladies won't play another home game until March 14, when they host Centre College.
