UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Kenyon College (2-0) and John Carroll University put on an offensive show on Saturday with the Ladies winning the non-conference lacrosse game, 22-20. The 42 combined goals scored were the second most in single-game history, bested only by a 23-22 contest against Ohio Wesleyan University on April 21, 1998.
Seven different Ladies recorded multiple points while newcomer
Julia Losey led the team with six goals and an assist. Classmate
Caroline O'Neil posted four goals and two assists while
Maggie Grabowski scored four times and
Julia Mahoney registered four assists.
The Ladies never trailed in the game, and got a boost by scoring the first four of the contest. Eight minutes in, Losey's free-position goal gave Kenyon a 4-0 lead.
Kenyon stayed in front until a 7-1 JCU run pulled the game to 10-9. Colleen Grombala tallied three of those scores while Carly Ross added a pair. At the 4:13 mark, the Blue Streaks trailed 10-9. Despite that push, Kenyon did not relinquish its lead and ended the half with an 11-9 advantage after a Grabowski goal with 21 seconds remaining.
About midway through the second half, the Ladies had attained another sizeable lead.
The Ladies scored the first four of the half from
Brett Bearrows, Losey, O'Neil and
Avery Morgan. Then at the 11:53 mark, Losey found Grabowski for her seventh goal of the season. At that point, it was 20-13 Ladies.
John Carroll made things interesting after that. The hosts scored seven of the next eight goals, four of which came in free-position attempts. Grombala's goal at 4:06 brought the tally to 21-20. Grombala had five points in that stretch and ended with a game-high 10.
Nevertheless, after pulling to within one, JCU could not overcome Kenyon. In the final four minutes, JCU had as many turnovers (2) as shots. Losey added another goal for the Ladies at 3:13 and that turned out to be the final margin.
Next on the schedule for the Ladies is another road date at University of Mount Union on February 25 at 5:00 p.m.
