Big second half pushes Raiders past Ladies

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Kenyon College Ladies lacrosse team got off to a decent start Tuesday evening against the University of Mount University. The Purple Raiders, however, turned things around and outscored the Ladies 10-4 in the second half en route to an 18-10 non-conference victory at Mount Union Stadium.

The Purple Raiders controlled the opening minutes, but they managed just one early goal from Mackenzie Lewis and held that 1-0 advantage for about seven minutes.

The Ladies finally broke through almost nine minutes into play. Senior Avery Morgan found a cutting Tatumn Eccleston to level the score. Less than two minutes later, Eccleston assisted Morgan to give the Ladies a 2-1 lead. Eccleston, a first-year, then assisted Julia Mahoney on consecutive goals to move the Ladies ahead, 4-1.

The two teams then exchanged a goal apiece, before the Purple Raiders rang up five straight during a 13-minute span. Sydney Bumbarger scored two of those goals and assisted on another to give Mount Union a 7-5 lead. A Caroline O'Neil goal ended the Ladies' scoreless streak after nearly 15 minutes, but the Purple Raiders added one more, to take an 8-6 lead into halftime.

Mount Union (1-0) rode that momentum into the second half, scoring on 10-of-18 shots, including converting 4-of-5 free-position shots. For the game, Mount Union was 5-of-8 on free-position shots, while Kenyon was just 1-of-10.

Kenyon (2-1) was not completely shut down on the offensive end. The Ladies managed to out-shoot the Purple Raiders, 37-32, but goalkeeper Molly McGinnis piled up 16 saves for the home team.

Eccleston led Kenyon with five points on two goals and three assists. Morgan scored three times and had one assist. Mahoney and O'Neill each finished with a pair of goals. At the other end of the field, Tori Simon and Delaney Gallagher combined for eight saves in front of the Kenyon goal.

Mount Union's Danielle Rohrman led all scorers with six points on five goals and an assist. Bumbarger and Mackenzie Pensyl each tallied three.

Next up for the Ladies is an extended spring-break trip in California. The schedule out west gets underway next Tuesday night with a game at Pomona-Pitzer.
