GAMBIER, Ohio –
Paige Matijasich scored with 0.3 seconds left to help the Kenyon Ladies basketball team rally for a 77-74 win against The College of Wooster on Wednesday night in a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) basketball game.
With the score tied at 74, Matijasich got open along the left wing, and drilled a three-ball from
Katie Orefice to push Kenyon ahead. The victory improved the Ladies' record to 8-13 and 5-8 in the NCAC.
Matijasich finished tied for the game-high with 27 points while sophomores
Amanda Carroll and
Madelyn Anderson contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Wooster's point guards caused issues for the Ladies in the first half and helped the visitors attain a six-point halftime lead, 37-33.
About four minutes through the first, Wooster trailed 10-9 after a Matijasich jumper from near the right block. Over the remainder of the quarter though, the visitors held Kenyon scoreless, forced four turnovers, five missed shots, and took a 15-10 lead into the second after A'Janay Nicholson's make.
In the second, the Fighting Scots never lost their lead and extended it to nine points on a couple of occasions. Their last came with 42 seconds as Masani Francis swished through a three-ball pushing the score to 37-28. Kenyon did score the last two buckets of the quarter, including a buzzer-beating three-ball from Anderson, to go down four, 37-33 at half.
After the break, Kenyon fought back to take a couple leads in the third stanza. With 5:52 on the clock,
Bridget Molnar scored in the post, and brought the score to 42-41. However, Wooster regained the lead on its next possession as Maria Janasko hit two free throws. By the end of the period, it was 59-52, Wooster.
A little over three minutes into the fourth, Wooster extended its advantage to ten, 67-57, as Janasko scored a layup. The Ladies' defense tightened after that.
From the 6:52 mark to 29 seconds left, the Ladies outscored Wooster 17-2 and held the visitors to 1-of-7 shooting and forced four turnovers. In that span, Kenyon hit all six of its shots and sank five free throws. With 29 seconds left, Molnar's free throw pushed Kenyon ahead 74-69. On Wooster's next possession, Francis hit a straight-away three to bring the tally to 74-72, and following a turnover by Kenyon, Francis scored again with a layup off the left side to tie the game.
That prompted a Ladies timeout, and on their next possession, Matijasich got open off a screen and swished through the three-point shot to give Kenyon the final margin. Wooster's final possession resulted in no shot attempt with not enough time to generate a good look.
Next on the schedule for the Ladies is a home game on February 12 against Hiram College.
