Maroons squeeze by Lords in fourth

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke College (3-3) handed the Kenyon College Lords (5-1) lacrosse team its first defeat of the season on Wednesday, winning 15-11 at Kerr Stadium.

With regulations in place due to COVID-19, the Lords' next game isn't scheduled to take place until April 4 at home against Hiram College. Be sure to stay connected to the home page for more information if/when it becomes available.

Early in the first half, Kern Byrnes forced a turnover which led to Kenyon's first goal. At the 11:13 mark, Mike Matteo broke the scoreless tie before Weston Powell followed about three minutes later and doubled Kenyon's lead.

Then with less than five minutes left in the quarter, the hosts tied things up. After a Lords turnover, Braedan Allen scored off a pass from Jack Callis. A few sequences later, Jason Sarro found the equalizer. That was the last of the scoring in the period for Roanoke, though, as Powell and Sam Humphrey pushed the Lords back in front, 4-2, with a pair of goals.

In the second, Roanoke struck first before Powell and Matt Pollack scored within 32 seconds of each other. The latter, from Pollack, at 9:48, had the Lords up 6-3.  Over the remainder of the quarter, one more goal would be had, by Roanoke. Both goalies, David Metzger and Matt Federau, ended up with a few saves in that time.

Trailing 6-4 at the break, Roanoke regrouped and had a big second half, out-scoring Kenyon 11-5.

The Maroons took their first lead, 9-8, when Parker Gann raced by a couple Lords defenders and fired from in front of the net at 5:05.

Roanoke scored again to make it 10-8 before another Lords goal. That one, a man-up score from Will Robbins at 1:56, made the tally 10-9. A quarter later, Kenyon pulled to within one again.

Two-straight scores from Robbins and Matteo brought Roanoke's lead to 12-11 with just under 10 minutes left in the game. Kenyon then had two more opportunities to tie the game on ensuing possessions, but could not find the equalizer on three shots.

The Maroons followed with three more goals for the final margin.

Powell led the Lords with three goals and an assist while Matteo tallied three goals. Metzger ended up with 18 saves.
