NAPLES, Fla. – On the final day of its spring-break schedule, the Kenyon College Ladies softball team split a morning doubleheader. The Ladies started Wednesday with a 13-4 loss to Rockford University, but bounced back with a 10-1 victory over Anna Marie College. The split moved Kenyon's overall record to 12-4.
In that game-two win, Kenyon racked up 16 hits, scored two runs in both the second and third innings and then scored three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. While Kenyon's usual suspects at the top of the order did damage with the bats, the bottom of the order also came through.
Kassie Rimel, batting in the No. 8 spot, put together a 3-for-4 game at the plate. Those numbers included a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Right behind her, batting in the No. 9 spot, was
Clare McMahon, who went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored.
Sara Campagna,
Emily Buckwalter,
Emily Pater and
Madde Hyland all contributed two hits against Anna Marie pitching.
After jumping out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, the Ladies got a solo home run from Pater in the third inning. That was her first homer of the season. Later in the inning, Rimel tripled home Hyland for a 4-0 Kenyon lead.
In the fifth inning, McMahon,
Grace Finn and Campagna each had run-scoring hits. In the sixth, a Rimel double scored one more Kenyon run and a Campagna single plated the final two runs.
On the mound, Pater worked a little more than five innings to pick up her sixth win of the season. She allowed just one run on five hits and a walk. She struck out four before
Sophia Gottdiener came on to get the final two outs of the game.
In game one, Rockford jumped all over Kenyon pitching early in the game. The Regents tagged Pater, the Ladies' starter, for eight runs in the first two innings. The defense didn't help much, committing three errors that made way for three unearned runs.
In the top of the third, the Ladies got their offense going. Three singles combined with a couple of Rockford errors allowed the Ladies to put three runs on the board. Campagna, Buckwalter all reached base and scored in that inning.
Rockford, however, did not let up. The Regents scored five more times over the next two innings to bring the game to an early halt. Kenyon's only other run came on an RBI single from
Nicole Bishay in the top of the fifth inning.
The Ladies had seven different batters account for eight hits. Buckwalter turned in the lone multi-hit game, as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
