Gow does it all in Kenyon victory

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – During the final game of its two-week spring break schedule, the Kenyon College baseball team saw junior Alex Gow guide the Lords to a 5-3 win over the Penn State Behrend Lions at Bob Gladwin Stadium on Friday afternoon.

On the mound, Gow threw all nine innings to pick up the win. He struck out 13 batters and all three runs he allowed were unearned. He walked just one and gave up only four hits, all singles. Gow entered Friday's game with an 8.10 earned run average, a 1.60 whip and a .279 batting average against. At the conclusion of the game, those numbers dropped to 4.26, 1.11 and .216, respectively.

At the plate, Gow, batting in the No. 5 spot, went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. That performance bumped his season batting average to an even .500.

The Kenyon offense gave Gow a boost right from the word go. In the bottom if the first inning, senior Joaquin Murrieta was hit by a pitch. He advanced to third base on Patrick O'Leary's single through the right side and later scored when Paul Siciliano reached base on a Penn State Behrend error. Two batters later, Andrew Rabinowitz singled up the middle to score Kenyon's second run.

A Kenyon error in the second inning led to the Lions' first run, but the Lords got it back after Jake Brown scored on a Murrieta ground out in the bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth, with two outs and two runners in scoring position, Kenyon committed another error, allowing both Penn State Behrend runs to score and tying up the game at 3-3. That didn't sit well with Gow, who came up in the bottom of the inning and ripped a one-out double to the left field wall. Rabinowitz followed with a double to right center and brought Gow around to score the go-ahead run.

The Lords, who moved their record to 7-8 with the win, tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. That run was produced beginning with another Gow double. He advance to third on an error and then scored the game's final run when Ryan Page singled him home.

Rabinowitz had two RBI for the game and matched Gow's 3-for-4 showing at the plate. O'Leary finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Penn State Behrend starting pitcher Thomas Zbezinski took the tough-luck loss. He threw nearly seven innings, struck out ten and allowed just five hits. The loss dropped the Lions to 4-6.
