Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Strong finish keeps Lords unbeaten

BEREA, Ohio -- An outstanding second-half defensive effort from the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team helped keep the Lords undefeated as they won 10-9 at Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday. Kenyon moved its record to 4-0 for the first time since 2007 in the process.

Kenyon's offense had several turnovers early in the first which kept it out of rhythm. Despite that, the Lords' defense held its own and kept the competition to a 0-0 draw.

A little over five minutes in, Declan Curry fired from straight away to break the scoreless tie. The Lords did not expand on that, though, and Baldwin Wallace responded by scoring three straight. The last of which came to Drew Braden at 3:38 on a pass from Ben Kubiak.

Kenyon's Will Harrigan and Mike Matteo then scored within 41 seconds of each other to tie the game before Kyler Byerly moved Baldwin Wallace back up 4-3 to end the period.

In the second, Joe Bolea scored two straight for the Lords to put the visitors back in front. His second, at the 7:56 mark, bounced over goalie Joe Storner. Once more, however, the home team rallied.

Baldwin Wallace earned several face-off victories and it allowed the hosts to score four in a row. At the break, Kenyon was down 8-5.

After halftime, each team scored a goal in the third and by the start of the fourth, it was 9-6 Yellow Jackets.

Then in the fourth, the Lords dominated. Kenyon's offense found some fluidity and out-shot Baldwin Wallace 14-7. Plus, they doubled up in ground balls (10-5) and won all five face-offs.

Within the first 2:05 of the stanza, Bolea and Matteo scored to pull Kenyon within one. Then, with just under four minutes left, Curry struck again, his second goal, and tied things up.

Kenyon's go-ahead score came to Weston Powell just 39 seconds later. Powell picked up a saved Matt Pollack shot and rifled it back in, sending the Lords' sideline into a frenzy.

Baldwin Wallace had three more chances to tie the game after that. However, David Metzger stopped them all to preserve victory. In the second half alone, Metzger notched nine of his 14 saves.

Next on the schedule is a home date with Centre College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
