Walk-off highlights another Ladies sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Facing their first real pressure-packed situation of the season, the Kenyon Ladies softball team rallied past Grove City College 10-9 before shutting out Finlandia University 8-0 on Wednesday at CenturyLink Sports Complex. Kenyon moved to 6-0 with the victories.

GAME ONE

Until late-inning fireworks, the Ladies and Wolverines combined for just one run heading into the bottom of the fifth.  That lone run came in the fourth when Grove City's Haley Dietz hit a one-run double to left field.

Apart from that, both pitchers and defenses made things difficult.

That all changed starting in the home half of the fifth. Down 1-0, the Ladies rang up a half-dozen runs to take their first lead.

Kathryn Riggs led off with a two-bagger to right center and was later driven in on a grounder from Grace Finn. Sarah Campagna followed with an infield RBI single to give Kenyon a 2-1 advantage. Kenyon's lead really opened up a few batters later. Senior Lauren Graf ripped a bases-clearing triple to push the lead to 5-1.  The Ladies' scoring was then capped off by Nicole Archambeau's RBI single.

Despite gaining huge momentum, Kenyon saw its lead disappear. Grove City scored twice in the sixth to bring the score to 6-3.

Then in the seventh, the Wolverines scored six more. Back-to-back RBI singles from Lexi Buck and Dietz pulled Grove City to within one, 6-5. In the next at-bat, Hannah Dietz bombed a grand slam to left field. That shot felt game-ending, but the Ladies still had a chance.

In the bottom of the seventh, Clare McMahon started a two-out rally with a single to short. That put two Ladies on the base paths. Finn followed with a crucial double to left center and plated McMahon and Archambeau, tying the game. Then, Campagna got a hold of a 1-0 pitch, sent it up the middle, and watched as Finn came home.

GAME TWO

Kenyon had no trouble against Finlandia as it run-ruled the Lions in five innings.

In the circle, Nicole Bishay (2-0) tossed four innings, scattered three hits and induced eight groundouts. Sophia Gottdiener also got into the rotation and closed the game in the fifth.

After a scoreless first, the Ladies found all the run support needed in the second.

Kenyon continued its strong ability to hit with two outs as Campagna hit a two-run single to center plating Bella Albrecht and Kassie Rimel. Bishay then hit a bloop single down the left-field line to plate one more. Over the last four games, the Ladies are 19-of-38 with two outs and have tallied 18 two-out RBI.

The Ladies added a run in the third before scoring three more in the fourth. Madde Hyland scored on a passed ball while Albrecht drove in Archambeau on a groundout. The Ladies' third run of the frame came on a throwing error.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Ladies ended the game on another walk-off. Hyland took a 2-2 pitch to center and pushed Finn across home.

Tomorrow, the Ladies will face Clark University (3-3) and North Central College (0-0) starting at 11 a.m. at CenturyLink.
