Two leads slip away in loss to Wilkes

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Twice during Thursday's baseball game at the Lawnwood Complex, the Kenyon College Lords held a lead over the Wilkes University Colonels. Those leads didn't hold up, though, and a three-run eighth inning from Wilkes was the deciding factor in Kenyon's 7-5 loss.

Wilkes (2-4) chalked up the first run of the game off Kenyon starter Zach Frizzera in the top of the third inning. Kenyon (1-5) came right back in the bottom of the inning and tagged Wilkes starter J.T. Hibschman for three runs. Ryan Page led things off for the Lords with a single. Two batters later, he scored on a triple from Patrick O'Leary. O'Leary then scored on a sacrifice fly from Alex Gow. After Gow, J.J. Conway drew a walk. He moved to third on a single from Alexander Hoskins and later scored on a wild pitch, giving Kenyon a 3-1 advantage.

That Kenyon lead didn't last long. Wilkes piled up a two singles, a double and triple to score three times in the top of the fourth inning. That barrage led to Frizzera's exit.

The Kenyon offense came right back and scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to move ahead 5-4. After a leadoff walk, Hibschman was removed from the mound and replaced by Jonathan Martens. He then issued another walk and hit Page to load the bases. Two batters later, Gow singled home two runs.

Back on the mound, Will Allen relieved Frizzera and cruised through three scoreless innings. In the seventh, however, Allen was strapped with the loss after his defense let him down. A single followed by two Kenyon errors got another Wilkes run to the plate. Later in the inning, Nathan Chandler came on to pitch for Kenyon. He uncorked a wild pitch that scored another Wilkes run. When the off-target pitch ricocheted off the backstop, Chandler scooped it up and tried to throw out a runner advancing to third. That throw got away from him, too, and the Colonels tallied their seventh and final run.

Both teams had 11 hits. Wilkes stranded seven runners and Kenyon left 11 on base. Gow led the way for the Kenyon bats. He was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Pages was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and O'Leary was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Next on the Lords' spring break schedule is a Friday doubleheader against Northland College (1-7). Game one gets underway at 10 a.m.
