Kenyon splits doubleheader with Marymount

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Kenyon College baseball team used a four-run third inning to defeat Marymount University, 5-4, in game one of Monday's doubleheader. The Saints evened the score in game two, starting things out with a five-run third inning en route to a 10-0 victory.

In game one, the Lords trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third. Andrew Rabinowitz then kick-started a Kenyon surge, getting hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Alex Gow smashed a two-run home run to left field. That homer, his first of the season and fifth of his career, tied things up a 2-2.

The Lords weren't done, though. Alexander Hoskins and Brent Henderson ripped back-to-back singles to left field. Kyle Dwyer then stroked a double to the left-center gap and plated both Hoskins and Henderson to give Kenyon a two-run cushion.

As the teams headed to the fourth inning of play, both starters, Charlie Bailey for Kenyon and Will DiGiulian for Marymount, were out of the game. In the top of the fourth, Kenyon reliever Sam Richards worked into and out of a jam. In the bottom of the inning, Marymount reliever Clint Wheeler was not as fortunate.

Ryan Page led things off against Wheeler with a single. Rabinowitz tried to sacrifice Page over, but Wheeler went to second instead and made an errant throw. Page was later caught stealing with some confusion on the base paths, but singles from Trenton DiFilippo and J.J. Conway, brought Rabinowitz around the bases to score what would hold up as the game-winning run.

Nathan Chandler took over on the mound for Kenyon in the fifth inning. Through no fault of his own, Marymount scored two unearned runs on a play that should have gotten Kenyon out of the inning. Chandler, however, protected that one-run Kenyon led to the finish. He ended up throwing three innings. He did not yield a hit and he struck out five.

At the plate, the Lords totaled eight hits, all by different batters. Rabinowitz scored two runs and Gow and Dwyer both chalked up two RBI.

Game two was all about Marymount pitcher Stephen Gerade. He threw a complete game shutout with just six hits and two walks. He fanned seven Kenyon batters and allowed only three runners to reach scoring position.

At the plate, the Saints got all they needed in the third inning, scoring five times with the help of two Kenyon errors. A two-run fourth inning aided by another Kenyon error followed and then a three-run fifth. Neither starter Zach Elsawy nor reliever Jimmy Clark had an answer for the Saints, who posted 11 hits and drew five walks.

Page had two hits in game two for Kenyon, as did Gow, who finished the doubleheader 3-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and three walks. The Lords' other game-two hits came from Rabinowitz and Paul Siciliano.

The split moved Kenyon's record to 4-7 and Marymount's to 10-5. The Lords are right back in action Tuesday morning with a single, nine-inning game against Immaculata University.
