Second half propels Big Red over Lords

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After a close first half, the Denison University Big Red used a strong second half to defeat Kenyon College, 45-7.

After a Kenyon punt on the opening drive, Denson started their first possession from their own 32. The Big Red moved down the field to the Lords' 15-yard line. The Kenyon defense held strong holding Denison to a field goal attempt. On the attempt, Kenyon roughed the kicker, setting Denison up for first and goal at the seven. Following a short run, Trey Fabrocini punched the ball into the endzone for the score. The Big Red's touchdown separated the two teams at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Denison received the ball near midfield after another Kenyon punt. The Big Red tacked onto their lead with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Drew Dawkins. With just over two minutes before halftime, Jaylen Cardoso intercepted Dawkins at the Kenyon 25-yard line. The Lords started their final drive of the half at their own 26. On third down, Ryan O'Leary found an open Finn Murray for a 70-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to seven. Headed into the locker rooms, Denison led Kenyon 14-7.

Starting the second half, Denison took their opening drive down the field, but the Kenyon defense held the Big Red to a 41-yard field goal. Denison's next drive ate up four minutes off the clock as they stretched their lead to 17 with a minute to go in the third.

In the fourth, the Kenyon defense continued to limit the Big Red ground attack as they forced a punt. Denison went to the air on their next possession as they scored on a 54-yard touchdown pass, giving them a 31-7 lead. With four minutes left in the game, Dawkins found a spot in the Kenyon defense as he connected with Ryan Hallinan for a 46-yard touchdown. The Big Red finished their scoring following a defensive takeaway with a one yard run to go up 45-7.

The Lords hit the road for a matchup with Wittenberg University next Saturday at 6 p.m.
